Despite reports earlier in the week saying that he would be active on Sunday, QB Ben Roethlisberger will not suit up tomorrow for the Steelers in their huge divisional matchup against the Ravens due to the concussion he sustained last week.
On Thursday, Big Ben said, “It’s part of the nature of the beast of playing this game. It’s a violent, physical contact sport and there’s a chance you’re going to get hit. You guys don’t talk about the bruises we have all over our body. If I showed you a bruise on my shoulder and a bruise on my shin, it wouldn’t get talked about as much. It’s a violent sport we play.” He claimed that he had every intention of playing at the time.
Roethlisberger went through a normal week of practice, but on Friday, he became hesitant about playing on Sunday and warned the Steelers’ medical staff. They decided it would be best for him to sit out.
In his place will be starting QB Dennis Dixon, who has appeared in one game in his NFL career and completed one pass.
The Steelers will likely turn to their ground game with Rashard Mendenhall and Willie Parker to limit the amount of throws Dixon is forced to make, but the Steelers must not risk becoming too one-dimensional against a ferocious Ravens defense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a significant blow with the loss of backup quarterback Charlie Batch.
Batch will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left wrist during the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The backup quarterback had come on in relief of Ben Roethlisberger in overtime after he suffered a head injury.
Roethlisberger is going to play against the Baltimore Ravens this week despite the head injury, and the team has little other choice.
Starting third-string quarterback Dennis Dixon would be pretty close to conceding the game, something they can’t do at 6-4.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost what could end up being a back-breaker for their playoff hopes in a 27-24 overtime defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Safety Troy Polamalu missed the game with a knee injury, and you could easily tell that his absence really hurt the Pittsburgh secondary.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played well despite two interceptions but missed the overtime period after he took a knee to his helmet.
Roethlisberger was diagnosed with a concussion and did not return to the game. The team does not yet know his status for next week’s game.
The Steelers would still be in the playoffs as of today, but their remaining schedule is no cakewalk with two games against the Baltimore Ravens and a contest against the Green Bay Packers still to come.

The defending Super Bowl champions were no match for Matt Cassel and 2-7 Kansas City on Sunday.
Cassel led the Chiefs to a shocking upset over the Steelers on Sunday, beating them 27-24.
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had an absurd day statistically, throwing for 398 yards and three touchdowns, but the Steelers got a scare when he left overtime with an apparent head injury. While being sacked by Derrick Johnson in overtime, Roethlisberger apparently took a knee to the helmet, knocking him out of the game.
“He took a blow, needless to say, it was a concussion-oriented thing so I doubt he was going to come back into the football game,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “I don’t have a lot of information in terms of where he is or his level of availability. We will have more information as we proceed.”
Roethlisberger reportedly told teammates today that he would be fine to play on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. That means the Steelers can take a breath of relief, as they announced that backup QB Charlie Batch would be out indefinitely after an injury he suffered last night.
The Steelers allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening play of the game (as has been their Achilles heel all season), but reeled off 17 straight points to take command of the game going into halftime. The Steelers allowed the Chiefs to linger a bit too long, and Cassel guided the game-tying drive with five minutes left in the game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could not get into the end zone and ultimately fell at home to the Cincinnati Bengals in a showdown for first place, 18-12.
It was a tough day for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who threw for under 200 yards, did not have a touchdown and threw an interception. He was also sacked a number of times.
Pittsburgh’s defense played pretty well in keeping the Bengals out of the end zone, as they scored their only touchdown on a kickoff return.
They really shut down Chad Ocho Cinco and the Cincinnati passing game despite the fact that Troy Polamalu left the game in the early going with a knee injury.
Pittsburgh travels to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs before a big showdown in Baltimore against the Ravens that could have serious playoff implications.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got off to a slow start but eventually rolled past the host Denver Broncos, 28-10.
Pittsburgh was dominated for much of the first half but used a defensive touchdown to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Steelers returned the favor, dominating the Broncos in every facet of the game.
Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes each found the end zone and the Steelers added another defensive touchdown.
Pittsburgh now must quickly turn around and begin preparing for a showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.
