Steelers fall to Bengals, 23-20

The Pittsburgh Steelers led the Cincinnati Bengals for nearly the entire game, except when it mattered most.

The Steelers gave up two late fourth quarter touchdowns en route to a disappointing 23-20 loss to the Bengals.

It marks the second straight loss for the Steelers, who also fell on the road last week to the Chicago Bears.

The Steelers defense played very well for three quarters but couldn’t get a stop when it mattered the most.

Pittsburgh returns home next week for a tough game against the San Diego Chargers.

Steelers edged by Bears, 17-14

Two missed field goals by the Pittsburgh Steelers proved very costly in a 17-14 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Kicker Jeff Reed is normally as accurate as they come, but he missed two kicks that could have put the Steelers in front.

The Steelers then allowed the Bears to move their way down the field to set up the game-winning field goal with just 20 seconds remaining.

Any hope of a last minute touchdown or field goal to tie or win the game went by the wayside when the kickoff was fumbled and recovered by Chicago.

The Steelers have a key divisional matchup now when they face the Cincinnati Bengals next week.

Polomalu out 3-6 weeks

Pittsburgh Steelers star safety Troy Polomalu strained his knee against the Tennessee Titans and will miss extensive time.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said the best case scenario is that his defensive quarterback misses 3-6 weeks.

Polomalu had to leave the game early and did not return. The difference was noticeable, as the secondary struggled almost immediately following his departure.

The safety said he is just very thankful that the injury will not require surgery and isn’t any worse than it is.

It will be interesting to see how the Super Bowl champions handle the next month without one of their best players.

Steelers edge Titans, 13-10

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened up defense of their 2009 Super Bowl win with a 13-10, hard-fought, overtime victory over the Tennessee Titans.

It was a shaky effort from the Steelers, at least when it came to their ground game. The Steelers and Willie Parker had no room to run, forcing them to lean on the pass.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was up to the challenge. Despite throwing two interceptions, he racked up more than 360 yards and a touchdown.

He also helped drive the Steelers right down the field for the game-winning score in overtime, showing that he plays his best druing crunch time.

Pittsburgh travels to Chicago to take on the Bears next week.

Parker set for season opener

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker returned to practice and should play in Thursday night’s season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Parker has been bothered by a hamstring injury that caused him to miss time during the preseason.

He is looking forward to rebounding from a disappointing 2008 season that was plagued by various injuries.

Parker really struggled against the Titans when the two teams met last year, but he won’t have to deal with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth this time around.

Roethlisberger sharp in return

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp in the third preseason game after missing the previous contest with an achilles injury.

Big Ben moved around well in the pocket and made a couple of big plays out of nothing in helping the Steelers to a 17-0 shutout win over the host Buffalo Bills.

Roethlisberger is at his best when things break down, so seeing him improvise and turn nothing into a big play looks to be all the proof the team needs that he is healthy once again.

His performance was that much more impressive when you consider that starters Willie Parker and Santonio Holmes both missed the game with injuries.
